Archive: G-FEST XVIII Movies

The G-FEST double double feature was back by popular demand. For those who couldn’t get enough big screen kaiju action, we once again sponsored a one day mini film festival at the Pickwick Theater. Four movies (two double bills) were shown on Thursday, July 14th, one pair in the afternoon and one pair in the evening, as well as our regular Friday and Saturday night features.

Gamera: Super Monster

Gamera: Super Monster

Kaiju Eiga Film Fest
Gamera: Super Monster, released in 1980, was to be the final entry in the original Showa Gamera series. Due to Daiei Studio’s impending bankruptcy, and severe budget constraints, this peculiar film relied heavily on stock footage from previous Gamera movies, pitting the giant turtle against all of his previous foes. This showing will be Gamera: Super Monster’s North American big screen debut.

Released in 1961, Mothra introduced what would become Toho’s most popular kaiju after Godzilla, and would mark the beginning of the film studio’s incorporation of more fantasy related themes and elements. Vibrant and colorful with wonderful effects work, and the beautiful songs of the endearing Shobijin, Mothra will always remain a classic. 2011 will be the film’s 50th anniversary screening!

Kaiju Eiga Film Fest
Returning to direct his second Godzilla film in the Heisei series, Takao Okawara’s Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, released in 1993, is considered one of the strongest entries from that period. The return of Godzilla’s most infamous foe, excellent special effects work, as well as Akira Ifukube’s powerful, thunderous score make this an absolute fan favorite.
