The following special guests appeared at G-FEST XVII:
Guest of Honor: Akira Takarada
Akira Takarada became one of the most recognizable actors associated with the Godzilla series, portraying navy diver Hideto Ogata in the original Gojira in 1954. He has since appeared in five other Godzilla films to date, as well as other Toho science fiction films including Half Human, King Kong Escapes, and Latitude Zero. One of Toho’s most distinguished and successful actors, Mr. Takarada is a celebrity in Japan, still making appearances in television dramas, quiz shows, and commercials.
Special Guest: Robert Scott Field
The star of Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, Scott has become an integral part of G-FEST since he first attended in 1999. Each year, G-FEST attendees look forward to renewing their friendship with Scott, and hearing about the latest happenings in the Land of the Rising Sun.
Special Presenter: Dr. William M. Tsutsui
Dr. William M. Tsutsui is dean of Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences and professor of history at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. A specialist in the business, environmental, and cultural history of twentieth-century Japan, he holds degrees from Harvard, Oxford, and Princeton Universities. He is the author or editor of seven books, including Godzilla on My Mind: Fifty Years of the King of Monsters. He co-edited (with Michiko Ito) In Godzilla’s Footsteps: Japanese Pop Culture Icons on the Global Stage and has recently completed the volume Japanese Popular Culture and Globalization.
Special Presenter: David Kalat
Returning to G-FEST this year was David Kalat, a scholar of Japanese fantasy cinema, and the author of the books “A Critical History and Filmography of Toho’s Godzilla Series,” and “J-Horror.” He hosted a session entitled “Godzilla without Monsters: The Rising of the Sinking of Japan.” David is the founder and president of All Day Entertainment, an independent DVD label created with the express mission of rescuing lost movies.
Special Guest Panelist: Bob Eggleton
Bob Eggleton is a multiple-award winning science fiction, fantasy, and horror artist. His drawings and paintings cover a wide range of subject matter, but he will be most recognized here for his work on dinosaurs, dragons, and of course Godzilla. Bob has painted numerous memorable covers for Random House’s Godzilla series and Dark Horse’s Godzilla King of the Monsters. A life-long Godzilla fan since early childhood, Bob worked as a creative consultant on the American made Godzilla, and while in Japan, appeared as an extra in Godzilla X Mechagodzilla.
